Dica para hoje: veja só estas sentenças relativas a chegar em algum lugar e/ou participar de alguma coisa, em português mesmo.
Em inglês, a expressão make it (to some place or event) é usada para expressar "conseguir ir" ou "conseguir chegar" a algum lugar.
(someone) (make / made / will or will not make) it to (place or event)
Veja como ficam os exemplos acima:
- I couldn't make it to the party yesterday. I was still studying at midnight.
- You made it! Cool.
- Are you coming to the barbecue tomorrow?
Nope... we won't be able to make it.
É muito comum uma pessoas expressar alegria por ver que você veio a algum evento, como no segundo exemplo.
You made it! Glad to see you here.
Para ilustrar melhor, aqui vão mais exemplos:
Jennifer wasn't sure that she was going to be able to attend an important presentation last morning at 8AM.
Her sister called her last morning at 11AM, and asked her:
- So, the presentation - did you make it? [= você conseguiu ir?]
- I did! Thank goodness. [<-- Jennifer made it to the presentation = Jennifer conseguir ir à apresentação]
Nota: Thank goodness = Ainda bem (expressão de alívio)
Jack tinha prometido comparecer à apresentação de seu colega Morgan.
Mais tarde, Louis disse a Morgan:
- Hey, I didn't see Jack in the audience.
- He didn't make it. He was stuck in the office. [Ele não conseguiu vir. Ficou preso no escritório]
We have a study group at school. We meet every week to study. This week, however, people were busier than usual.
We had a meeting yesterday, but only two of us made it. [Só duas pessoas do nosso grupo conseguiram ir à reunião]
Last Friday I went to an event at Barra Funda which was supposed to start at 9 [6a feira passada eu fui a um evento na Barra Funda que ia começar às 9]
I took a cab, but the cab driver didn't have a clue [Eu peguei um táxi, mas o motorista não tinha ideia] how to get to where I needed to go [como chegar onde eu tinha que ir]
I almost didn't make it in time [Quase não cheguei a tempo], but in the end [no fim das contas] we managed to find the building [conseguimos encontrar o prédio] where the event was taking place [onde o evento estava acontecendo] a few minutes before 9 o'clock [alguns minutos antes das 9].
